Frieze Masters 2014
It would be impossible to talk about Frieze Masters without talking about The Collector. Helly Nahmad Gallery completely transformed their gallery space into an apartment in Paris in 1968 with the purpose to question the true meaning of collecting art. The installation shows that looking at a person's art collection can be just as meaningful as reading that person's journal.
Frieze Masters is different from Frieze London because it focuses on historical art rather than contemporary art. All the art shown here were made before 2000. Artists like Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Wayne Thiebaud dominated the fair and it was refreshing to see some of their lesser known works as well as their signature pieces.
Another major piece of art we HAVE to mention is by the artist Seung Taek Lee. He primarily works with stone and cords and as well as being in this fair, his work can also be found at Tate Modern. It's amazing how he manipulates the way we see stones. Although we regard them as something hard and heavy, the way he hangs them from the wooden bar makes them look soft and light.
